A few tips

  • Look for a place within walking distance of the station or bus stop, and ask your hosts how to get there. Many are happy to help, and some will even pick you up.
  • Check the time of the last train or bus back, especially on Sundays and off-season, when there are fewer departures. In small towns a bus may run only a few times a day.
  • Treat the ride as part of the date: sit together if you can, bring a thermos, snacks and a book to read aloud. With nobody driving, you finally have hours to talk.
Where can you go for a weekend by train in Poland?

The easiest picks are cities with big stations and compact centers, like Kraków, Wrocław, Gdańsk, Toruń or Poznań, where you can walk or take a tram from the train to the old town. Trains also go to the coast, to the foot of the Tatras and to Mazury.

How do you get to the Polish mountains without a car?

The train is the easiest way: it goes to Zakopane, Szklarska Poręba and Wisła, among others, and buses run from nearby cities to many other mountain towns. From the center you can usually walk to a trail or take a short local bus ride.

Can you travel around Poland without a car?

Yes, trains and buses link the big cities and many popular tourist towns, and the ride is often more relaxing than driving, with no traffic jams or parking to find. It gets harder in small villages and remote areas, where a bike or a taxi helps with the last stretch.
