A few tips

  • On October weekends the Bieszczady and the Tatras get crowded, since many people come for the colors. If you can, go midweek or pick a lesser-known range, such as the Beskid Niski.
  • Days are short and mountain weather changes fast. Start hikes in the morning and pack a headlamp, a hat and a rain jacket, even if the valley is sunny.
  • Pick a place with a fireplace or sauna and have a rainy-day plan: a museum, thermal pools or a café with a good book. Long fall evenings make a cozy room half the trip.
Where to go for a fall weekend in Poland?

The mountains with beech forests are the most beautiful: the Bieszczady, the Beskidy and the Pieniny, plus Roztocze and Kotlina Kłodzka (the Kłodzko Valley). If you prefer a city, go where there are big parks and riverside boulevards, which look their best in the fall.

When is the golden Polish autumn?

Usually from late September to mid-October, when the leaves are at their most colorful and the weather can still be sunny. Colors come a bit earlier in the mountains, and every year is different, so check recent photos from the area before you go.

Is the Baltic coast worth visiting in the fall?

Yes, if you like quiet: after the season the beaches empty out, prices usually drop and a walk by a stormy sea can beat a summer day on the sand. Bring warm layers and check ahead what stays open in the fall.
