Where Andrzejki comes from
Andrzejki is celebrated in Poland on the night of November 29 to 30, the eve of St. Andrew’s Day. It is the last party before Advent and was traditionally a night of fortune telling about love.
In the past mostly young women told fortunes, while young men had their own night on St. Catherine’s Eve, November 25. Today Andrzejki is for everyone: couples, friends and whole families, and the fortunes are an excuse to laugh and talk about what’s ahead.
How to pour wax at home, safely
- Get a bowl of cold water, a big key with a clear eye and a white candle or pieces of wax.
- Melt the wax in a metal cup placed in a pot of hot water, not directly over a flame.
- Pour the wax slowly through the eye of the key straight into the water. The figure sets in seconds.
- Take it out, turn off the lights and rotate it by a lit candle, looking for a shape in the shadow on the wall.
- Be careful with hot wax and children, and keep the candle on a stable, non-flammable base.
